The Trump administration has issued an executive order directing for the elimination of most paper checks issued by government agencies and by taxpayers for government payments by September 30, 2025.
The Executive Order will require the use of electronic deposits for most government benefits s well as required payments from taxpayers. Payments from the government would be made to bank accounts, debit cards, and financial wallets.
The Executive Order will require the use of electronic payments for estimated tax payments, as well as IRS income tax and estate tax refunds. It will also include payment of Social Security and other government benefits. Taxpayers who do not have access to electronic banking services would be excused. Taxpayers would be required to make estimated income tax payments electronically, as well.
The stated goal is to improve government efficiency and eliminate fraud and waste
The IRS website provides for electronic payments to the IRS. We encourage those who can start using its features. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
