James C. Provenza & Associates
My name is James Provenza. Being Italian, I’m going to talk with my hands a little bit. I founded James C. Provenza & Associates, PC about 1982. We’ve been practicing estate planning, for-profit businesses, and representing not-for-profits. I got started in this watching Perry Mason, believe it or not. Not-for-profits especially have some unique problems. There aren’t a lot of lawyers who represent the not-for-profit sector. They’re governed by a lot of tax laws. I’m also a CPA, which had a big influence on the direction that I wanted to go. There also aren’t a lot of lawyers who do tax work.
I’ve helped people not just through specific transactions, but I try to give them advice to help move their organizations forward, serving their customers, or in the not-for-profit case, serving whoever their constituents are. On the not-for-profit side, we work mostly with those who are in what I’ll call the social service sector, homeless people. We have a few schools, so there’s things like employment law; there’s IRS problems; there’s corporate work that has to be done as well.
