The Internal Revenue Service announced yesterday that not for profit organizations that have form 990 deadlines between April 15 and July 14 will have until July 15 to file, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Here are the details.
The extension is available automatically. You do not need to call or file any form to take advantage of it. However, if you need an extension of time beyond July 15 you will need to file Form 8868 prior to July 15 to request it. You can get an extension only for six months from the original due date. If your normal due date is May 15 and you need an extension to November 15 you should file form 8868 to request the extension.
This does not apply to the report due to the Illinois Attorney General. The report is due June 30 for calendar year filers. You can request an initial 60-day extension by sending a letter to the Attorney General before the June 30 deadline if you are a calendar year filer.
