Starting a Nonprofit Organization in McHenry County

Here is a brief checklist, along with links to the required documents, needed to form a not-for-profit corporation in Illinois. Many of these guidelines are outlined in the General Not For Profit Corporation Act (805 ILCS 105).
- Application of Reservation of Name: Form NFP 104.10, which reserves the name for 90 days
- Articles of Incorporation: Form NFP 102.10
- Federal Employer Identification Number: IRS Form SS-4
- IRS Tax Exempt Status Application for Recognition of Exemption: Form 1023 or Form 1024

For Illinois tax exemptions, you’ll need to complete the necessary documents (see tax-exempt applications page) and send them to the Illinois Department of Revenue, located at:

If the Secretary of State accepts your articles of incorporation, you’ll thereafter receive of certificate of incorporation. Within 15 days of receiving this document, send both the certificate and the articles of incorporation to the McHenry County Recorder. The Recorder’s mailing address is:
